Finding a lawyer in Buriram

Before you sign anything with a law office in Buriram, it pays to understand how the profession is licensed, how fees are quoted, and what a proper engagement looks like.

The basics that never change

• Practising lawyers hold a Lawyers Council of Thailand licence — you can ask for the licence number, and the Council maintains a public register. Court representation requires a licensed Thai lawyer; foreign lawyers cannot appear in Thai courts, though they can advise alongside a Thai litigator.
• Most provincial work is quoted as fixed or staged fees: fixed for defined jobs (a will, a company, an uncontested divorce), staged for litigation (retainer, then per-hearing or per-stage instalments). Get the quote, and what it excludes, in writing.
• A proper engagement letter — scope, fees, who handles the case, how disbursements (court fees, travel, translation) are billed — is the mark of a serious office. No letter, no engagement.
• Court and filing fees are separate from lawyer's fees and are generally a modest, capped percentage of a money claim — ask your lawyer to itemise which costs are the court's and which are theirs.

How fees actually work

Thailand does not regulate lawyer's fees by fixed schedule outside a few statutory items, so quotes vary by office, complexity and the lawyer's experience. Three patterns are common in Buriram: a flat fee for a defined, low-risk job; a staged fee tied to the phases of litigation (filing, first hearing, trial, appeal); and, occasionally, a contingency-style arrangement for straightforward debt-collection work where the lawyer's fee comes as a percentage of what is actually recovered. Whatever the structure, ask what happens if the case settles early, if it drags on, or if you want to change lawyers midway — a fair engagement letter answers all three before you sign.

Matching lawyer to problem

• Land and inheritance: the core of provincial practice; ask how many Land Office transfers and estate administrations the office handles in a year.

Working with more than one lawyer

It is normal, not a red flag, to combine advisers: a Buriram-based lawyer who knows the local court and Land Office staff, alongside a Bangkok or specialist firm for a technical company, tax or intellectual-property question. Say so upfront — a competent local lawyer will coordinate rather than resist, and it avoids paying big-city rates for routine provincial filing work.

Red flags

• Guaranteed outcomes, or claimed influence with police, officials or judges.
• Pressure to sign Thai-only documents you have not had translated.
• Fee quotes that grow after work has started, without a change in scope.
• One lawyer “helpfully” acting for both sides of a purchase.
• Refusal to give a licence number or put the engagement in writing.

If something goes wrong with your lawyer

Complaints about a lawyer's conduct — not just an outcome you dislike, but genuine misconduct such as mishandled client funds, conflicts of interest or abandonment of a case — go to the Lawyers Council of Thailand, which has its own disciplinary process and can suspend or revoke a licence. Keep your engagement letter, receipts and correspondence; they are exactly what a complaint, or a fee dispute, turns on.

If English matters

English-speaking lawyers exist in Buriram but are not universal.
